Next-Gen Consoles: Will Nintendo be First?

According to Edge-online, Colin Sebastian, analyst of Lazard Capital Markets, predicts that the next wave of consoles will be "before 2011, and more likely in 2012."
While this seems to be the norm to us by now, he suggests that Nintendo will make their console first.

"One possible exception to console timing may be Nintendo, which
could opt to upgrade the Wii with faster processing power, DVD
capability and/or greater storage."

He also says that the PS3 will not "gain significant market share until hardware prices reach mass market levels."

T.J.'s response:

Well I knew the big three were planning their next consoles already, and them coming out in late 2011 or 2012 seems on schedule with the norm; but Nintendo? Really? They can't even keep enough Wii's on the shelves for people to buy right now; for them to release an upgraded system before 2011 seems to be stretching it for me. I'm also a bit worried about the Big N's new system. I'm 90% sure they will make the new system backwards compatible with the Wii's technology, but they're just constantly talking about evolving games and going into new territory. Hopefully they won't announce a new system with different technology just as they are able to keep up with the demand for Wii's. Time will tell.

Tim's Response:

Maybe Nintendo just wants to make Animal Crossing VR already damnit.

WAR is Gold

Warhammer: Age of Reckoning has gone gold.

Tim's Response:
Personally I'm not sold on this game quite yet. I will for sure check out a trial copy and see what I think. The realm vs realm combat is what I, like many others, am interested in. Whether the RvR works well or not is only one thing I'm hesitant about. The other thing is the interface. After playing WOW and being spoiled with the honed excellence of that game's interface and general feel I find it hard to get into anything else. Case in point being Age of Conan, I bought AoC on impulse and found it to be very dissappointing. Unfortunately in the world after WOW you have to present something cohesive and user-friendly day one, doing so without directly copying wow is a tough task indeed.

Europe's Advantage

You want your video games same time as everyone else, Europe? Here's SCEE president David Reeves to tell you that being last is an advantage, "when everything's ironed out in the end".

“People say, ‘Well, why do we always get things last? Why can’t we say things?’
Well, I’ve said this many times before: sometimes it’s an advantage to be last in
Europe, you know, when everything’s ironed out.

“This time, we do have things to say in the European [market]. We have the music
service, and we’re doing great things on SingStar and there’s more to come. These
are global announcements."

That make you feel better?

T.J.'s Response:

You know the saying "nice guys finish last"? Well apparently Europe are the nice guys when it comes to getting video games.

Not so sure about that one. It's hard enough for me, living in America, to suffer the wait for a game after it's release in Japan; I couldn't imagine waiting even longer after that. I know Europe does get some games that America never gets, but they don't appeal to me so it doesn't seem worth it to me.

There you go Europe, you nice guys you. While I'm playing my copy of Chrono Trigger DS in November, it'll be with the nagging thought that you guys have the advantage when it comes out sometime in 2009. You lucky dogs.

Tim's Response:
Having lived in Australia for the first 17 years of my life I don't think Sony understands that Singstar and a handful of other games that come out first or are exclusive to the other regions don't make up for having to wait 6 months on AAA titles.

Castle Crashers Are Go!

Castle Crashers is finally coming out on XBLA this Wednesday!

Tim's Response:

I am so very excited to finally get my hands on the finished product with Castle Crashers. I played it in the IGF pavilion GDC 2007, needless to say I was very impressed and walked away wanting more. I can't wait to play the co-op on this beast.

As a fan of Alien Hominid it's great to see The Behemoth back in action with Castle Crashers, I have always loved their design aesthetic. I know that this is one XBLA title I will be staying up to 4:30 am for. Hopefully the rest of the Canoodle Strudel crew will be there to romp through the awesome with me.

T.J.'s Response:

I've been looking forward to this game as well. I actually never played Alien Hominid but the art style and gameplay caught my eye. Castle Crashers is as visually exciting as Alien is, and co-op is always a plus is my book. I call lightning.
